Errors in healthcare are recognized causes of adverse events threatening patient safety. Recent studies are alerting on the number, the magnitude and the consequences of such errors, and have raised patient safety to the top of the healthcare agenda worldwide. Information technology is increasingly becoming the number one weapon against avoidable adverse healthcare events by providing essential tools for the monitoring of healthcare processes, and for the automatic reporting, analysis and prevention of healthcare errors.
The International Workshop on Information Technology for Patient Safety, held in conjunction with the 9th International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine ITAB 2009, is envisaged as a compilation of the latest trends and developments in the field of information technology for patient safety.
